What Logo Design Involves

Logo design is the creation of a single mark - or a wordmark and symbol combination - that identifies a business across every context in which it appears. The mark must be distinct, scalable, and applicable in full colour, monochrome, and reversed form. A logo that cannot survive these three conditions is not fit for use.

Most logos fail at the brief stage, not the drawing stage. The designer is asked to produce options; the client picks the one that feels right in the room; the mark goes into use without anyone having tested it against the competition or considered whether it communicates the right thing to the right audience.

Every project at VISTA begins with a written brief that defines what the mark must communicate before a line is drawn. The brief defines the audience, the competitive context, and the positioning. The mark follows from that.

What Differentiates a VISTA Logo

Finally, a logo design studio in London that presents one well-reasoned direction, not three options to vote on in a meeting.

One concept, not three

VISTA presents one logo direction, not a shortlist. When a client is asked to choose between three options, the decision shifts from strategy to personal preference. Personal preference produces logos that satisfy a committee and communicate nothing specific.

A single, well-reasoned direction forces the right conversation: does this mark do what the brief requires? If it does not, the refinement process addresses why not. This produces sharper outcomes and fewer revision rounds than the three-option model.

Built for every context from day one

A logo that works on a business card may not hold at billboard scale or collapse to a sixteen-pixel favicon. VISTA designs for all contexts from the first sketch: full lockup, compact version, favicon, and reversed application on dark backgrounds. Each variation is delivered at handover, not treated as an optional extra.

Vector source files included as standard

Every logo VISTA delivers includes vector source files: SVG and EPS. A vector format is a file type that scales to any size without quality loss - from a social media profile image to a five-metre exhibition stand. Without the original vector file, a logo cannot be reproduced at large-format scale without degradation. Many studios charge extra for source files or retain them. VISTA transfers them in full at handover.

Who We Design Logos For

VISTA's logo clients fall into three categories.

Startups and new businesses that need a credible mark before they begin trading. They have a clear business and a defined audience but no visual identity. They need a logo that represents them accurately at the stage they are at, not a placeholder they will have to replace in eighteen months.

Established businesses whose current logo no longer serves them. Even if the original mark was appropriate at launch, a business that has evolved in positioning, audience, or market tier will eventually find that its logo creates friction rather than recognition.

Sub-brands and product lines. A parent company launching a new product or service division often needs a secondary mark that relates to the parent identity without replicating it. Sub-brand logo design requires an understanding of the existing brand architecture - the structural relationship between the parent brand and its sub-brands - before the new mark can be designed.

Even if your current logo has served the business for years, misalignment between a mark and the current positioning of the business shows up in the perception of people encountering the brand for the first time. They read the logo before they read the copy.

The Logo Design Process at VISTA

  1. Written brief. We document the business positioning, target audience, competitive context, and required applications before any design work begins.
  2. Competitor audit. We review the logos of direct and adjacent competitors. A mark that is distinctive in isolation may be derivative in context.
  3. Logo concept. We develop one mark with written rationale explaining every decision: form, weight, spacing, and the logic connecting the mark to the brief.
  4. Refinement. Two rounds of structured revisions within agreed scope. Feedback is collected as a single document per round.
  5. Handover. All files in every agreed format - SVG, PNG (transparent), EPS, PDF - plus all variations (full colour, monochrome, reversed) and full IP transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

From brief sign-off to handover, a standalone logo project takes two to three weeks. The timeline depends on feedback turnaround at the refinement stage. Projects where feedback is consolidated and submitted as a single document per round always complete faster.
VISTA presents one direction. If the concept does not meet the brief requirements, we address that in the refinement stage. The three-option model exists to give clients a sense of control; it does not produce better logos. We explain the rationale for every decision in writing, which makes it straightforward to assess whether the direction is right.
If your existing logo was delivered without source files, we can redraw it in vector format. The redraw is quoted per project after we have assessed the existing mark. This is not a redesign - it is a technical reproduction of the existing logo in a usable format.
Full IP transfer is included at handover, which means you own the mark and can pursue trademark registration. We recommend engaging a trademark attorney for the registration process. VISTA does not provide legal advice on intellectual property protection.
The Logo Design package includes the primary logo in its specified colour and in monochrome. A defined colour palette with hex, RGB, and CMYK values is included in the Logo + Essentials package and above.
